There are some really funky names for the tools in our Children’s Sensory Library: Wiggle Seats, Fidget Gyroscopes, Sensory Boards and a Body Sock to name a few. Using them can help a child focus and relax. Our “Sensory Library” is really just a cabinet filled with lots of wonderful things that any family at the Olean Center can use.
“They can help calm a child whether they are worried about something or just getting a little too silly for a little too long,” said Jason Lanzillo, Director of the Children’s Program. “We have noise-canceling headphones, and a variety of fidgety, hand-held devices they can keep in their pocket. But we also have things like a compression vest that feels like a hug and a body sock that allows a kiddo to step into it and stretch against this breathable fabric to help them get their energy out.”
These devices have been available for a few years thanks to the Andrade-Faxon Charities for Children and the John D. and Katherine A. Johnston Memorial Foundation. Jason and his staff have refined the program to make better use of the funding by working with children at the Center and with their teachers to determine which devices are the most successful.
While it’s helpful for a parent or staff to have these tools handy when a child needs them, what we really want is for the child to know that they can reach for one anytime they feel the need. “The goal is to have the child recognize when they need to use one of the sensory items for support, and we work in partnership with the family and staff to help make that happen,” Jason said.
A big focus right now is finding devices suitable for older children, from early teens to 20. Fortunately, we’re seeing a variety of new items for older kids like keyboard keys they can click. We’ll always on the hunt for new items.” Got a suggestion? Email Children@OleanCenter.org.
