What does a Clinician do in the Olean Center’s Children’s Department? We asked Claire Letizio, a compassionate, creative, energetic, and highly experienced Clinical Supervisor.
“At the beginning, I just try to help families understand that they will get through this, and things will be okay,” Claire explains. “I try to serve as a role model when I’m with them so they can repeat the strategy when I’m not there. The key, however, is showing respect for the family and understanding where they are. I tell them I live in the real world too – I get it. I’ve got three kids, so I know it won’t always go according to the plan.”
As Claire describes it, her work with intellectually and developmentally disabled children and teens is both challenging and rewarding.
She works to help families create strategies that can ease their challenges by addressing behaviors, always leading with respect, empathy, and real-world understanding. She also works with teachers and other agencies that might be involved in care so there is consistency in all environments. Being an Olean Center Clinician is about setting up the individual and family for success. There’s a lot that goes into that success, so stay tuned for more about all that Claire and others in the Children’s Department do.
