There are days highlighted by a “goose bump moment” when a participant realizes a dream or attains a goal, and then there are days when the lift van won’t start.
Such are the highs and lows of operating a center dedicated to supporting the dreams of those living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Executive Director Ruth Tureckova coined the phrase “goose bump moments” to describe the times when it’s clear the mission of Frank Olean is alive and well.
Keeping our vehicles well maintained may not feel like it’s part of the mission, however, they allow participants to attend community events, go shopping, volunteer, or even go on a job interview.
“It’s very important to have these vehicles to access the community,” said Josette Sobers, Director of Community Partnerships. “From attending Special Olympics, to job training, or even walking on the beach, our vans are vital.”
If you see us out and about, give us a wave, and know that it’s through community support that we are out on the road learning and having fun. So, we will be reaching out to you in 2025 to ask for your help to keep us on the road!
